Westland formed in 1966 from Nankin Township after Livonia tried to annex the land planned for Westland Shopping Center. The mall, opened in 1965 and now anchored by JCPenney and Kohl's, still anchors the Ford Rd and Wayne Rd shopping district, so retail strip and outlot property make up much of the commercial market.
